Supported Independent Living (SIL) Through the NDIS: Empowering Independent Lifestyles

Safe, stable, and suitable accommodation is more than a basic need—it’s a foundation for wellbeing, dignity, and independence. At Univa, we understand how crucial it is for people with disability to feel secure and supported in their homes. That’s why we offer Supported Independent Living (SIL) options under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), designed to help participants live as independently as possible, while receiving the support they need—day and night.

What Is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living refers to the help and supervision of daily tasks for individuals with higher support needs. SIL services are provided within shared or individual living environments, and may include assistance with personal care, domestic duties, and meal preparation. Unlike some forms of short-term or community-based support, SIL is intended for those who require ongoing, often round-the-clock, assistance.

This service is ideal for people living with significant disabilities who need regular support to carry out everyday activities. However, the ultimate goal is not dependency—it’s independence. By building daily living skills in a safe and structured setting, participants are better equipped to lead fulfilling lives on their own terms.

You can learn more about SIL directly from the NDIS website, which outlines eligibility and how it fits within broader NDIS goals.

    Tailored Support, 24/7

At Univa, we believe support should never be one-size-fits-all. Every person we assist has different goals, challenges, and preferences. That’s why our SIL programs are always developed in consultation with the participant, their families, and support coordinators. Whether the person prefers to live with others or on their own, our team ensures that their home environment and level of support reflect their individual needs.

SIL assistance is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can include overnight support—either active (where staff are awake and present) or passive (where staff sleep onsite but are available if needed). This flexibility is especially valuable for individuals who may need help during the night with medication, mobility, or personal care.

    Living Independently—But Never Alone

While the term “independent living” suggests solitude, SIL is actually a collaborative model. Most participants in SIL arrangements share accommodation with others who also receive NDIS supports. This shared model offers both social interaction and cost-effective care, without compromising the quality of support.

That said, we also recognise that shared living isn’t the right choice for everyone. We support individuals who prefer to live on their own by helping them access suitable properties and designing support packages that offer peace of mind without intruding on their privacy or autonomy.

How SIL Helps You Live the Life You Want

The strength of Supported Independent Living lies in its ability to adapt and evolve. We work closely with each participant to identify their goals—whether it’s learning to cook, maintaining personal hygiene, or simply managing a household budget. Over time, we aim to build capacity and confidence so that people can reduce their reliance on support, if and when they’re ready.

We also understand that choosing a SIL provider is a big decision. That’s why we maintain open communication and transparent reporting with participants and their families. Our commitment is not only to provide high-quality support but also to empower people to make informed choices about their care and living arrangements.
